Eye Health Education

Eye Health Education builds awareness on avoidable of blindness, visual impairment and eye care in communities and improving eye health seeking behaviour. The Human Eye The human eye is the organ of sight. The major function of the eye is to work with the brain to provide us with vision.
Major Eye Diseases The main diseases that affect the eye and cause blindness or visual impairment are cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and refractive errors Cataract A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. It is the most common cause of blindness and is conventionally treated with surgery. Glaucoma Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to your eye’s optic nerve. It is often associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. Diabetic Eye Diseases Diabetic retinopathy is one of the commonest and perhaps the most serious complication for diabetics. It is the leading cause for blindness in Europe and USA. Diabetes is a fast growing problem in this region and currently estimated to involve 5% of the inhabitants of this region. About 10% of the diabetics have diabetic retinopathy that needs retinal laser treatment to avoid irreversible blindness. At IECL, we have facilities and programs for early diagnosis and treatment for Diabetic Eye Diseases. We have Retinal laser facilities as well as capabilities for Intra-ocular Anti-VEGF injections for treatment of this condition. Cornea The common corneal related causes of blindness it this region are injuries, infections, corneal dystrophies and keratoconus. We offer emergency and long term treatment to these conditions including Corneal transplants. Uncorrected Refractive errors Problems with reading and distance vision occur in one out of 10 individuals in this region meaning that about 520 000 require proper refraction and dispensing of appropriate glasses to improve vision. IECL in Partnership with Brien Holden Vision Institute have availed a Vision Centre for proper measurement of the refractive errors and provision of low cost as well as trendy design eye glasses. We perform school screening programs to pick out and provide glasses at affordable cost to young people with reduced vision that could otherwise unknowingly affect their ability to learn.
